Finally, a video to start putting those tools (at least the value scale) to use. Concepts to remember: 1. The Law of Transition (Rule of 3) - it takes a minimum of three value changes to make a gradation 2. Three Approaches to Describing Form - SPATIAL - top/front/under/side left/side right NOMENCLATURAL- Highlight, Light Light, Middle Light, Dark Light, Halftone, Light Shadow, Middle Shadow, D...

YOU AND YOU VIDEOS ARE GEMS.. watched you during covid and you have changed my painting life. Thank you
Sr. Carlin, tengo sus videos como si fuesen la biblia de las mezclas, para mi es imprescindible estos videos, muchas gracias, pasan los meses y ahí los tengo para recordar. Un saludo desde España Mr. Carline, I have your videos as if they were the bible of mixtures, for me these videos are essential, thank you very much, the months go by and there I have them to remember. Greetings from Spain
Hi Neil, I am glad I found your channel! I have been watching your videos all week. I had my ta da moment! Things started to click! Thank you.
Are the bracketing colors listed somewhere?
That color/value isolation cards are genius. I use my fingers in a circle (thumb and pointer finger) and look through the circular hole in order to isolate an area. Do the same thing between painting and subject with my fingers as well. Your way is much better: no low chroma orangey color surrounding the spot, let alone both hands having different amounts of light on them, to throw off the color/value I'm seeing. The cards with the little lip to keep them in shadow is great. I'm going to have to try that. Very cool!
Thank you sir, very elaborate and informative video
I've learned so much thank you
Just wanted to thank you. I’m a model builder I am truly at the end of buying little acrylic or oil based tins ready mixed 😂 I have started making my colour wheel and bought oil paints instead as I am going to get a lot better results with those bottles and tins is different finishes all the way. I better learn this. So I’m on a self made colour mixing course. You’ll be happy to know I took your recommendations on nuetral Grey set from Williamsburg they do sell here in the UK. 🇬🇧 so I am very happy I will learn though. From ivory to white by learning. Also the colour wheel in going to complete however for me I am only really needing browns sand colours flesh tones and all the greens and grey-blues naval air or sea I am also going to build some galleons wooden ones and detailed and so I want the whole thing to work from the off. I thank you as this is upping my game even though it’s not on canvas I thank you again.
? How do I get the paint list to use ?
Thank you so much!
Awesome video!
That weel is WRONG
Thank you so much!
Thank you! I have learnt so much from your videos. Making your value charts, colour wheel and chroma charts has taught me a LOT. I'm so glad you put the time into making these videos and sharing them with us.
I am grateful. This is the first time I have come across a video that explains mixingl in such depth, thanks for that, you made me happy.
Thank you, you make it easy to understand 😊
Do you have an alternative for the YR Cadmium Orange from Vasari, it's hard to get a hold of for me.
you explaine verything so well i wish you were my real teacher!! i will be buying your courses
Wow que hermoso wonderful job❤ bendiciones
It really brought me back watching your videos. You remind me of my favorite art teacher. Im glad I can continue my art studies in the same style I started them.
i noticed you didnt give any tube colors for some of the bracketed colors. is that because there isnt one, or just didnt mention them? im curious since i basically own every gamblin color from a previous project.
How do you translate the home value to the step of CHROMA? E.g. Cad Orange HV 7 = 16 steps chroma. You lost me there. Thanks much. I am charting and learning so much.
thank you for being so thorough
Absolutely fantastic!!! Thank you so much.
Gamblin is musell friendly. They list the value of all their hues. A master chart is available on their site. That is extremely helpful for their grays when we want to make our own grey scale. Our scale will be more accurate because of their help. This is the only site I’ve found that shows how to mix the Musell charts. Thank you.
Excellent, unique, consolidated, clear (explanation & photography). Difficult to intuite where darks are placed, appreciate your showing us. The colcolumn’s show a steady progression in value paralling the grey scale. Chart actually shows two dementions?
These are so beautiful.
You are an excellent teacher, by the way and you can indeed draw and paint. A picture is worth a thousand words and if a teacher does not demonstrate, I find that useless.
Fantastic! Years ago, I learned the Riley System but no one ever taught beyond Part 1 of your modeling the cast (what you call the "fill" stage), they would call poster and blend. Color in the shadows were always greyish brownish, not attractive but color in the lights were good. No Riley teacher ever demonstrated and I wondered if they, indeed, could draw or paint or were just quoting Riley's notes. Part 2 of modeling the cast demonstrates how you finish or model the form. Would like to see specifically portraits done outdoors. I did find useful finding the local value of flesh at 6 or 7 and shadows 3 or 4 for form lighting. Do not mix the Riley palette but with just the broad value of the flesh in the light and shadow can modify from there. Interested is some of the theories if not the palette itself.
EXCELLENT Patient Instruction!
Thx a lot... Very useful...
Just did a plein air competition this past weekend. I've only painted outdoors like this a few times and am realizing that the hue green in nature can be VERY challenging. Could you please make a video on mixing greens as seen in nature and things we need to be aware of so as not to end up with a painting that is all the same value or too saturated, etc. THANK YOU!
Awesome!! I like the structure very much
Appreciate you putting out this information for public viewing.
So beautiful., Please what is the title of the music? it is so haunting and perfect for the life of this Saint. Thank you. This painting should beon a Holy Card. 🙏✝️
Thank you so much for these wonderful video series.
Fantastic videos parts 1-6. Thank you so much.
Been waiting for a detailed lesson on these Munsell charts forever. Thank you very much!
Wow you are an amazing blessing I'm in fla I would really like to to your academy
I feel blessed to have stumbled into your RUclips videos/Chanel thank you so very much
Only 1.6 K views. What a shame this excellent and vital color knowledge is not better utilized. Sooo well done. Thank you!
Could you substitute venetian red with burnt sienna (RYR)and raw sienna for burnt sienna(YR)? So the colors would be yellow ochre, raw sienna, and burnt sienna🤔
Thanks so much for this. Really invaluable information

Muchas gracias sr. Nelson por su dedicación a la enseñanza por internet, puede creernos que le sacamos muchas enseñanzas a su sabiduría al cual le estoy muy agradecido. Un saludo muy afectuoso desde España. Thank you very much, Mr. Nelson, for his dedication to teaching online, can believe us that we have learned many lessons from his wisdom, to which I am very grateful. A very affectionate greeting from Spain
Where do you get the canvas that you are making these charts on?
He mentions it in first video
I love that you've done this series for making chroma charts, but man, we have to mix so much paint to make the color wheel, flesh wheel, chroma charts, etc. I'm going to do it, because it is seriously helpful, but a lot of work.
Yo quiero tener un profesor como Nelson. Qué maravilla enseñando, qué seguridad me daría bajo su dirección, pero no todo el mundo enseña bien, unos mejor que otros, así es la vida. Gracias Nelson desde España
Brilliant! I was struggling to figure out how you created your grey scale values! Thank you soooo much fir this video!
In a million years it would not have occurred to me that I'd need to mix the burnt umber and raw umber together before making this string of color values. Absolutely essential information. Thank you so much for making this so easy to understand. I'm getting a better and better grasp of color mixing!
